In accordance with an aspect of the present invention there is provided a remote controllable material handling system for particulate matter, said material handling system comprising a material handling device configured to carry the particular matter, said material handling device including one or more actuators operatively coupled thereto, said one or more actuators configured to transfer the particulate matter carried by the material handling device, the one or more actuators responsive to one or more control signals; a MHD receiver operatively connected to the material handling device, said MHD receiver configured to generate the one or more control signals in response to one or more transmission signals; and a wireless remote transmitter moveable relative to the material handling device, said wireless remote transmitter configured to receive as input one or more operator instructions and generate the one or more transmission signals for transmission to the MHD receiver in response to the one or more operator instructions.

The term "particulate matter" is used to define types of fluid or granular particle based material that is capable of free flowing under its own weight in clumped, baked together, sunken or at least loosened or liquefied bulk configurations. Particulate matter may comprise particles such as chips or pellets, powder, grit, pebbles, gravel, rubble, ballast, crushed or broken solids or other format as would be readily understood. Particulate matter may be an organic or inorganic material including grain, wood, fertilizer, seed, soil, peat, sand, rock, stone or other matter, or combination thereof, as would be readily understood by a worker skilled in the art. Particulate matter may include dry, moist or a wet form of matter as well as liquid matter such as sludge or the like, for example. Furthermore, liquid associated with particular matter may be aqueous or otherwise as would be readily understood by a worker skilled in the art.

In a second embodiment of the present invention, information about material handling system and their components is embedded in the system along with a series of rules for how the elements of the system can interact. For example, rules may be included in a model of a conveyor system to ensure that a stop is always placed at the end of certain sections of track or that a certain spacing is always maintained between a given pair of elements. By providing detailed information about each conveyor system element, a wide variety of analyses can be performed on the elements and the overall system to locate design errors quickly while they are still easy and inexpensive to correct. The inclusion of these rules in the system also makes it more difficult to connect conveyor elements improperly in the first place. When the model also includes information about the environment in which the system operates, rules can be used to analyze relationships between the conveyor and any other building systems such as the HVAC system and the building's structural supports.

In a third embodiment of the present invention, macros are added to the system to extract other types of information therefrom. These macros can analyze a conveyor system, for example, and determine the system's power requirements, calculate the cost of the system, or calculate the production capacity for a single conveyor or the entire conveyor installation. These macros can perform other functions as well. For example, each time a section of track is placed, macros can be run to automatically add appropriate supports and connect them to the building that houses the conveyor.

In a fourth embodiment, a separate material handling object is defined as a subset of the piping object. This is allowed by CATIA and does not require access to software code. While the three dimensional modeling of material handling systems can be accomplished by making changes to the piping object, the creation of a separate material handling object within the piping object allows the precise definition of categories specific to material handling. This is necessary when the separation of material handling components from piping components is desired.

The goods to be transported in the material handling system 10 are supported by the pallets P, as designated and seen more particularly in FIG. 5 of the drawings. The pallets P may advantageously be of sturdy but noncomplex design to withstandrepetitive loading and unloading with attendant misuse while having a minimum of operating components which might be adversely affected by dirt or foreign matter which may be encountered particularly in loading and unloading areas which are frequentlypositioned exteriorly of the system. The pallets P, which, for a particular system may conveniently be identical, have a platform 20 which may be the primary load support for goods in the form of containers or otherwise being handled by the system. Thepallets P may have restraints such as upstanding rails (not shown) projecting from the top of the platform 20 depending upon the type of goods to be handled to insure the stability of the goods on the pallets P particularly during accelerating anddecelerating phases of pallet movement.

Further referring to FIG. 5 the pallets P are provided with running gear, generally indicated by the numeral 25. The running gear 25 for each pallet consists of four wheel mounting assemblies, generally indicated by the numeral 26, positionedpreferably proximate each corner of the under surface of the platform 20 such as to provide stability to the pallets P during the movement thereof. Each wheel mounting assembly 26 consists of two wheels 27 which are disposed in spaced fixed relation onperpendicular axes. Preferably, both wheels 27 of each wheel mounting assembly 26 are journal mounted on an angle bracket 28 by an axle member 29 which may take the form of machine screws or other element depending upon design characteristics of thesystem. The angle bracket 28 is in turn affixed to an attachment plate 30 which is rigidly attached to the undersurface of platform 20 as by machine screws 31. Thus, the axles 29 of the wheels 27 are perpendicularly oriented and spaced from theundersurface of platform 20 such that the lower surface of each wheel 27 of wheel mounting assemblies 26 is presented in a downward coplanar position when a pallet P is operationally positioned within the system.

For a purpose which will be hereinafter apparent each of the wheels 27 of the wheel mounting assemblies 26 has two independent running surfaces. As depicted in the preferred embodiment the wheels 27 have a V-shaped groove 32 constituting one ofthe running surfaces preferably positioned substantially centrally of the lateral extent thereof. Positioned preferably to either side of the V-shaped groove 32, the wheels 27 have a cylindrical surface 33 constituting a second running surface. Although the groove 32 could be an indentation having a different geometric configuration or could be positioned to either lateral extremity of the wheel 27, the above disclosed configuration is advantageous at least in terms of component availability.
